Tell me more!Where It All Began
My Teacher to Online Educator Journey
I started my teacher journey at Nottingham university. Once I'd completed my training, I worked at a school in Sheffield before moving to London to pursue a management position, eventually becoming the Head of Biology and Head of Science at my last school. I found teaching rewarding and was happy in my position.
Then: COVID-19 hit.
If you were a teacher pre-COVID-19, you know how drastically it changed our profession overnight. Suddenly everything was online, and students were floundering to grasp lessons effectively without teacher support.
I created my YouTube channel Miss Estruch Biology as a way to help my own students, but realised quickly that these resources could help any student struggling with biology and searching for more online support while we were all stuck at home.
We re-entred the classroom but I never left Miss Estruch Biology behind, growing it into a successful business with over 100k cumulative followers between TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram. Miss Estruch Biology sells a variety of Biology resources to help students succeed at their A-level, as well as partners with a variety of brands to bring new and exciting educational tools to students!
Learn more!In 2024, I Decided To Leave Teaching...
In 2024, due to the high demand for more Miss Estruch products and its success, I decided to leave formal in-classroom teaching behind (at least for now!).
There were 4 main resources for this:
Flexible Schedule
Going full-time entrepreneur through my biology education business, Miss Estruch Biology, has given me a much more flexible schedule than teaching. I'm able to spend more time with my twin boys, save money on childcare costs, take spontaneous day trips and holidays, and decide to stop working at 11am on a Tuesday if I need a break! It's really given me my life back from the 8am-5pm traditional teacher grind.
Burnt Out
If you're a teacher, you know how difficult the profession can be. Post-COVID, not only do you have to be "on" for students for the entirety of the day, deal with limited government funding, etc., you're also expected to have technology more integrated, and provide more at-home/online learning opportunities for students, adding just one more to-do to a teacher's never ending list.
Finances
I won't lie that this was one of the biggest if not THE biggest reason I decided to leave teaching. In my business, I make a lot more money than I do as a teacher, while having more control over my life than I did as a teacher! This transition has allowed me to move away from the traditional workforce while giving me back more time, freedom, and financial abilities to provide for my family. While this job has its cons, the ability to have financial stability (especially in our hard economic times) has been the biggest blessing.
Creativity & Growth
While there are so many elements of creativity in teaching, it's still mostly the same day after day. While my business has its core products, I'm able to get creative and experiment with new ways of helping students! Additionally, I felt like I was starting to stagnate in my career - if I didn't want to be a principal, where else was there for me to go? I was already the Head of Biology and Science, a lifelong goal and an incredible privilege, but once I'd achieved that I felt lost. In comparison, my business allows for limitless growth!
What You Can Expect From Me
I created Teach & Tell to help teachers - whether you're looking to find resources to reduce how much work you're doing on a daily basis, understand how you can prevent burnout, or want to start your own online education business and leave teaching altogether, I can help!
